
Set in the Hottentots Holland Mountains, Elgin traditionally an apple growing area is producing wines which are reflecting this history by being incredible fruitful. Their Shiraz, Merlot and Sauvignon blanc are the real highlights here. The seaside town of Hermanus forms the surrounding for the bar setting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines of Walker Bay. It soils, derived from sandstone, shale and granite are extremely variable but it is the cool sea breeze once again that turns this region into the perfect spot to ripen the vines to perfection.
The newest and southernmost vines in this region can be found in Elim, a Moravian Mission settlement near Cape Agulhas. This position is proving with its strong cooling winds and very cool ripening season to be a great spot for some outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. |
